Breastfeeding after thyroid cancer

Hi, Im 34 years old and just had my 1st baby in July...he is almost 5 months old and been breastfed only from the breast. I just found out I have thyroid cancer and will soon have to discontinue breastfeeding. Im gonna try to pump and store as much as I can in the short time I have. My question is... If I am able to get pregnant again after all of this will I be able to produce milk and breastfeed with NO thyroid? Im really depressed about having to quit feeding my baby, but with RAI treatment following my thyroid surgery it isnt possible anymore but I would like to have another child before Im too old and would love to be able to breastfeed again! Thank you so much for you time to answer my question.

Answer from the lactation consultant I am so sorry about your diagnosis. That is very tough.
You asked the right LC. Would you believe that my mom had thyroid cancer at 24 and had me at 27? She was able to nurse 3 children for a minimum of 12 months. So yes, it is possible. However, there is no cut and dry answer. Everyones body responds differently. Even if worst case scenerio you do not produce milk, you can still "nurse" your future babies with a nursing supplementer. (like many adoptive moms do). But cross that bridge when you get there. Find a good LC and she will help you make it happen.
As far as right now. Do what you can to store some extra but do not fret over it, you getting well is the most important thing. Cuddle with your baby and get through this.
As an option, there is an organization called MILKSHARE. It is a community where women donate breastmilk to other moms for use. www.milkshare.com (cut and paste to your browser to go there.
5 months of breastfeeding is something to be very proud of, do not beat yourself up over this. The big picture is for you to get better and love that baby.
My prayers are with you,
