Breastfeeding Toddler

Breastfeeding Toddler / Extended breastfeeding opinions vary from person to person. Here in the US, most consider nursing beyond 12 months extended nursing.

Nursing beyond a year has health benefits, emotional benefits to mom and baby AND economic benefits for the family and culture.

It has, gratefully, started to become a trend over the last decade. Probably in part due to the magnitude of published, scientifically proven studies stating the benefits of nursing beyond a year. Also, because of the availability of support through lactation consultants online and off, peer support and support from the medical community at large. What used to be taboo is now becoming normal. Yah!

After reading Dr. Sears extended breastfeeding article. I now recommend his tactic of rebutting peoples urgings to wean by simply replying "my doctor advises me to continue to breastfeed". Most people will not argue with a doctor. Some other good answers are:"We will wean when WE are ready""Please keep your opinions to yourself"or simply ignoring them.

So ,to answer your question, "When should I wean?". The answer is up to you. When you and baby are ready. There is no "right" answer. My motto is: "As much as you can for as long as you can."

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a year. Ultimately, the decision is up to you. I encourage you to aim for a year and go from there.
