Breastfeeding While Sick
"Is breastfeeding while I am sick ok or do I need to supplement with a bottle until I am well?" A very common question I am asked during cold/flu season.

Most of the time moms are referring to an upper respiratory infection (cold/flu) or a gastrointestinal bug (vomitting/diarrhea).
My answer is an emphatic, "YES, please do continue to breastfeed!" While you are sick - your body produces antibodies (resistance) to the illness invader and passes this resistance to your baby through your breastmilk. The exposure is there if you are caring for your baby but if you stop breastfeeding the resistance element is eliminated. You have just taken away the main line of defense for your baby. Bad idea.
What about over the counter (OTC) medications? Always consult your lactation consultant or physician/midwife before taking ANYTHING while you are breastfeeding. Many OTC meds can have a negative effect on your milk supply (like antihistamines/decongestants can dry your milk supply) or might not be safe for baby.
On the flip side: if your baby is ill, there are special cells on your areola that respond to your babies illness through the saliva and make antibodies, put it in your milk to help your baby fight the illness. IS that not so cool? Try to mimic that formula makers!
