The First Feed of Breastfeeding

The baby is finally here. Whether born vaginally or c-section the first feed is very important.

Having the baby attempt to nurse within the first hour after birth is ideal. A newborn nursing as soon as possible will help reduce the likelihood of them needing artificial supplementation. We tend to over-analize this 1st feeding. If an alert newborn is placed skin to skin on mommy chest they will often self latch.Yes, they will latch with minimal or no intervention from us.

Now was that not amazing? AND remember, if you have any difficulty getting baby latched, then ASK FOR HELP. Your midwife or nurse will likely have the skills necessary to help that first time go smoothly.
