Food Journal

Keeping a food journal can be very important if your baby is fussy. Simply use this tool to help isolate which foods or food groups might be causing your baby some discomfort.

Before I go any further, I would like to say that most babies tolerate all foods without any trouble at all. But there are a handful that are symptomatic (see list below) when you eat certain foods.I have had doctors argue with me that foods mom eats do not effect baby but I beg to differ. I have breastfed two kids myself and with each child knew certain foods would make them gassy.

Here is a ready made version:

Items you need to make your own:Spiral notebook or 3 ring binder
(I recommend a small notebook you can fit in your diaper bag or purse)
Pen

Make a table on your paper to include:

  • Time you eat
  • All foods consumed including beverages
  • Baby's response at 2 hours
  • Baby's response at 3 hours
  • Other notes

I recommend keeping this record for 3-5 days in order to make a good observation/analysis.If you find a food on day one or two that you feel might be the gas producing culprit, eliminate it for 48 hours then reintroduce it and make a 2nd observation.

Here is a food log you can print off and use. Here are some symptoms you might see in a baby that is intolerant to certain food groups while breastfeeding:
