Foods To Avoid While Breastfeeding
Are there foods to avoid while breastfeeding? While most babies can tolerate any food mom eats while lactating some babies tummies are sensitive. Just like adults, huh? Many will argue that what is ingested by mom should not effect the baby. I beg to differ. While nursing both my daughters - I surely could isolate certain foods that would make them gassy and fussy. The first thing to note is that if mom or dad are intolerant to any foods, then baby has a higher chance of being intolerant to the same foods. Simple Genetics. My husband is lactose intolerant, and guess what: I could not dring milk while nursing my newborns. Eventually, they could tolerate the milk but not for the first 4-6 weeks. I drank lactose free milk to resolve their symptoms. Here is a list of common culprits for gassy/fussy babies or baby crying after feeds: - Milk and dairy
- Beans, broccoli, cauliflower
- Onions and onion powder (fast food uses lots of onion powder)
- Fruit juices (orange is the biggie)
- Caffeine
- Chocolate: breastfeeding and chocolate are fine for most couplets, so dont panic!
- Tomatoes
- Spices like galic/curry
- Ceasar salad dressing (contains anchovie sauce)
Does it mean that you should not eat any foods from the above list? Absolutely not. Most babies do fine with all these foods. It is a very small percentage who are sensitive. Here is what you do: if your baby is very fussy/gassy or spits up a lot after feeds, then you need to keep a
food journal.
By writing down what you eat, you can isolate which foods are causing the discomfort for baby.
Remember, it only takes two hours for what you eat/drink to make it to your breastmilk.
If you do cut out certain foods, you can re-introduce that food again in 4-6 weeks and see if baby can handle it then.
