I do not produce milk, why?

Hello,

I've given birth to my daughter since nine months but I faced the problem of not producing milk, in the first week i had only drops of milk in my breast. the problem is that my breasts didnt change in size during pregnancy and the milk didnt come in them postnatal. i stopped feeding my daughter since she was 4 months.

i am not pregnant now but i am really concerned about my second baby.

regards,
Wafa

Answer from the lacatation consultant

There are many reasons why one might not produce adequate milk. I am assuming since you said you breastfed until 4 months, that you produced some milk.
I would recommend you be evaluated by a doctor for hormonal imbalances: specifically thryroid, oxytocin and prolactin hormones. Also testosterone and estrogen levels as well. All these hormones can effect milk supply.
If all these check out to be normal, then you should contact a local lactation specialist who can help you with your next baby.
There are herbs and even prescription medications that can be used to increase milk supply.
