Induced Lactation
What is induced lactation?
A common question I see submitted on this website is something like this: "My baby is 4 weeks old, is it possible for me to start breastfeeding now?" Or "I am adopting a baby and heard that I can breast feed, is this true?"
Yes, and YES! But how? you ask.
Using the Relactation protocol thats how. This protocol allows women to stimulate milk production even if they have not delivered a biological child. So you can imagine, it is much easier to relactate if you have had a recent delivery. Nonetheless, it is possible for most women, regardless of pregnancy to make breastmilk for a child. As long as you have breasts with ductal work and a functioning hypothalamus gland (in the brain).
How does it work? It is NOT as simple as pumping. (although you do need a
great breast pump)
This is a common myth. Pumping alone will not trigger a big enough hormonal response to make adequate milk supply. You might make some milk pumping but likely not much. There are medical protocols written by a doctor and a nurse that called the Newman-Goldfarb protocols. There are three different versions to meet your exact needs.
Lastly, in preparation for this process, it is important to have a great support system. Find support locally or online from another mom who has "been there, done that". Call your local la leche league or lactation consultant to find a support person.
