A breastfeeding mom might experience symptoms of candida on her nipple by feeling a burning when nursing. (I have heard "my nipple feels like its on fire when I feed" YIKES)A baby might have a white coating on his lips or tongue. Mom can have symptoms and not baby, baby can have symptoms and not mommy or both can have symptoms. But if either of you have symptoms, you both need to be treated or you will just pass it back and forth when latching. My pediatrician neglected to tell me this when my daughter was diagnosed and it took us a very long time to get over it because I was not treating my nipples. Finally, I read an article somewhere that told me to get treatment. (this was long before I became a lactation consultant). Once I began putting the correct cream on my nipples and continued treating my baby, we were cured of the nuisance. I also spent quite a bit of time, going topless around the house when I discovered yeast cannot grow in a dry environment. It was an added perk for my husband. Lol. Here are some tips to prevent newborn thrush:1. Limit pacifier usage.2. Keep your nipples dry. Change your breastpads often and let them airdry for a bit after each feed.3. Avoid using nipple shields.
