Preparation Myths

There are two common preparation myths floating around out there about preparing for breastfeeding.

Myth #1 Use a rough washcloth for a couple weeks on your nipples to "toughen up" your nipples in preparation for breastfeeding.Myth buster: no nipple preparation is needed. Proper latch will prevent most nipple injury. No need for the sandpaper treatment, OUCH.

Myth #2 Applying ointment to your nipples PRIOR to the baby getting here will prepare the nipples. Myth buster: not only will this NOT help, it can hurt. Keeping the nipples too moist can cause them to be more sensitive and/or cause a common yeast infection on the nipples.
