Pros Cons Exclusive Pumping
Pros Cons Exclusive PumpingIf you do not have the choice because your baby is in the NICU or for some other reason, do not even read this list. This list is for someone who is considering pumping and bottle feeding as an alternative to breastfeeding. Pros:
- Less likely to have sore nipples(if using a good pump) at the benning
- Privacy/Modesty
Sorry, those are the only two pros I will agree with- I disagree wholeheartedly about it being more convenient. How is having to pump more frequently than a baby would be nursing more convenient? How is having to spend time pumping THEN feeding baby with a bottle more convenient? How is having to store, thaw, warm then feed and clean bottles more convenient? It's just not. Cons: - Time Consuming: pumping, bottle feeding, cleanup, storage
- Low milk supply: pumps simply do not stimulate or empty as a baby does. There are ways to overcome this but you must work with a lactation consultant closely to overcome this hurdle.
- Blocked milk ducts and/or mastitis: insufficient emptying
- Storage: extra supplies and freezer storage space
- no immune response: when a baby suckles, a moms body responds to illness by making antibodies to help child fight off illness. This does not occur when exclusive pumping.
All that being said, if you have no desire to put baby to breast then yes, breastpumping is a viable option. I have worked with moms who absolutely would NEVER put the baby to breast due to past sexual abuse but chose using a pump to provide baby with breastmilk.
