Smoking while Breastfeeding
Frequently I am asked if moms can continue smoking or resume smoking while breastfeeding.
My first response is that it is best for you and your baby for you to quit. I have seen first hand the ill effects a newborn baby suffers while detoxing from nicotene. The screaming and shaking is near unbearable for nursery nurses.
But as a former smoker, I understand the addiction. Even though I have not smoked in over a decade, I still crave the stinking things from time to time. And I understand that if you were unable to quit during pregnancy, it is probably NOT going to happen in the immediate post partum period. But if at all possible quit. If not, then know that YES some of the nicotene will make it to baby. It can make babies irritable, fussy, not gain weight well.
And above all: NEVER smoke in the presence of your newborn. Second hand smoke is very dangerous. It can cause serious ill effects to your babies lungs and nervous system.

And what about smoking marijuana during lactation?
Yes, I get this question from time to time. I live in the US and marijuana is an illegal substance. Therefore, I do NOT in any way condone its use at anytime especially when around a child. Marijuana has a relaxing/sedating effect on most people- thus it does not seem wise to but under its influence while caring for a child.
If at any time (in the US) you are reported to by using any illegal substance in the presense of a child, CPS (child protective services) must be notified, you will be investigated and quite possibly risk losing your child. NOT worth the risk, in my opinion.
I am no prude but illegal drugs and parenting just dont mix.
All in all, this author does not support smoking and breastfeeding.
