Sudden Drop in Milk Supply

by Laura
(Palo Alto)

I am postpartum 4.5 months, and have been back and work for 5 weeks.

I've always been able to pump a good 2+ oz off each side about 4 times a day at work, and my baby is exclusively fed on breastmilk. I also breastfeed 3 times a day

Last week, I experienced a plugged duct and a fever for 3 days, although I constantly breastfed, since I stayed at home.

After the fever went away and the duct was cleared, I noticed that my milk supply has dropped off the cliff and has not come back, despite the fact that i am pumping or breastfeeding about 10 times a day to bring it back up. (It's been about a week that I've been doing this).

Are there any common causes for this sudden drop off? I do hope to conceive, but have not had my period at all, and a recent test was negative.

Note from the lactation consultant
The answer is your plugged duct. When you get a plugged duct, if not resolved quickly, sometimes it can result in reduced supply.
I would suggest you work directly with a lactation consultant who can make suggestions to your specific situation.
I would need to have a LOT more information in order to make suggestions. What kind of pump? Feeding patterns? Mom's health? Diet? Stress? among other things.
If you would like to schedule a private chat consult, I can help you with this OR you can contact a local lactation consultant who will walk you though this challenge.
