Tandem nursing

Tandem nursing is the term used to describe breastfeeding an older child through pregnancy, then continuing to breastfeed both the older child and the newborn.Breastfeeding through pregnancy is an option for most breastfeeding couplets. Unless your OB or midwife has directed you otherwise, weaning is unnecessary due to pregnancy. You might have a reduction in supply during pregnancy and often have tender nipples, but in most cases cessation of breast feeding is not necessary.

Here are some tips to make feeding both kids work for you:

  • talk about the newborns arrival with your nursling. Explain that the baby will be eating frequently because he cannot eat other foods
  • nurse the newborn FIRST during the first few days. The newborn should get first dibs on the colostrum. After your milk is in (again)then you can nurse them on demand again.

Here is a good book on this subject:

Breastfeeding two children at once can be enjoyable for all parties. But if at anytime you wish to wean the older child, that is an option as well.
