Thrush

Breastfeeding thrush is defined as a candida yeast infection. This can infect your nipples or the baby (mouth).

The symptoms on mom are a shiny, bright red nipple that feels as if it is on fire before, after or during a feeding.

The mouth symptoms are a white coating (of what looks like milk) on the lips, gums or tongue.

Mommy can have symptoms, baby can have symptoms or BOTH of you can have symptoms. Either way, both parties need to be treated. Otherwise you will continue to pass it back and forth.

For diagnosis please see your health care provider.

Oral Candidiasis is not something that will go away on its own. It will spread and spread if it goes untreated. And babies will get to the point that they refuse to nurse because of it.

Yes, there are home remedies and herbal remedies out there but in my practice, I recommend a physician exam and prescription treatment.

I personally struggled with yeast with my first daughter and tried the OTC treatments with no success. I was prescribed the medication by my physician for the yeast in my daughters mouth. However, I was not told to put the ointment on my nipples as well as her mouth. This resulted in 2 series of treatment before I discovered through my online investigation that I needed to be treated as well. Yikes. (all this was before I became a lactation consultant). With #2 baby we breezed through with no complications.
So even if you have no symptoms on your nipples, treat them as if you did to help prevent cross contamination.

Tips to avoid Candida:

Keep your nipples as dry as possible at all times: change nursing pads frequently

Use a blow dryer after bathing ,on your nipples, to dry them completely. Low heat setting

Do NOT overuse a pacifier (rotate them allowing to air dry 24 hours in between usage)

Consider eating yogurt or taking probiotics, especially if you are on antibiotics (which can lead to thrush) to help restore good bugs to fight the yeast bugs.

These are not TREATMENT tips, they are for avoidance. Yeast LOVES a moist enviroment so THINK DRY.
